Many adolescents today are struggling to cope with extreme levels of stress in school, in their families, and in their peer relationships.
Every teen moves at a different pace, however, some of these youth are overscheduled and being hurried through their adolescent years by parents and peers alike.
Others are dealing with the pressure of social media- spending hours on the computer/tv has taken place of spending family quality time.
WHY WOULD A TEEN CAUSE SELF HARM?
For some of these youth, cutting or burning themselves numbs away unpleasant thoughts and feelings. It is used as an escape from the stress from school and the pressure outside.
Understanding, that this is not a healthy habit and should not be continued is the first step. Secondly, a family therapist at Star Point Counseling Center will be able to help improve family communication, teach conflict-resolution and problem-solving skills.
